Septic Tank

Septic Tanks FAQ

How do septic tanks work?

Domestic septic tanks separate waste into 3 sections, in order for them to decompose.

The dense particles settle at the bottom, scum sits at the top, with water in between. The water is drained away while new sewage enters the tank from the home.

The sewage is continuously decomposing and allows for long term sewage waste.

When should a septic tank be emptied?

Your septic tank should be emptied about every couple of years. The average septic tank needs pumping every 2-5 years depending on age and functionality.

How to tell if your septic tank needs pumping:

  • Leaking or flooding
  • Slow draining
  • Bad smells
  • Thriving grass/greenery
  • Pooling water

How are septic tanks pumped?

A professional septic tank drainage will remove sludge, effluent and scum from the tank so it’s ready to be refilled.

The waste that collects at the bottom of the tank must be drained before it reaches a level where it could block the outgoing pipe which drains water.

Pumping your septic tank can take about 20-30 minutes, or up to an hour depending on its size.

Can septic tanks overflow?

Yes, septic tanks can overflow. Heavy weather can cause the tank to overflow, meaning spillage of wastewater onto land and can even reach nearby pipes.

Clogged pipes can also cause tank overflow, usually caused by debris entering its drainage and disturbing water flow.

How much does septic tank drainage cost?

Prices for professional septic tank draining can vary depending on size. For more information, reach out to us for a quote and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can.
